With its accreditation as a Category A teaching center for cardiology and Category B for cardiac and thoracic vascular surgery, the Hirslanden Heart Clinic sends a clear signal about continuing medical education.

CATEGORY A

Center for continuing education in Cardiology

Cardiology teaching takes place on a rotational basis. The residents pass through various disciplines: the outpatient clinic with a focus on echocardiography or rhythmology, the ward and emergency service, as well as the cardiac catheterization laboratory. This guarantees practical, versatile and well-founded further training.

All residents are assigned a personal tutor (senior consultant or consultant) for the entire duration of their training. This structured mentoring program enables individual support and enhances personal development. The Heart Clinic also offers the great advantage of 1:1 teaching in numerous clinical situations – from ward rounds and performing procedures (diagnostic coronary angiography, pleural punctures) to supervising echocardiographies of complex patients or pacemaker and ICD controls in the outpatient clinic. This ensures a continuous learning process with at a high level.

CATEGORY B

Center for continuing education in cardiac and thoracic vascular surgery

Just as in Cardiology, in Cardiac Surgery training supervision is based on the tutorial principle as well. Residents are closely supervised by experienced cardiac surgeons. The intensive 1:1 collaboration enables hands-on learning directly with patients. The residents are assigned to the operating theater every day and can thus gain extensive surgical experience. Surgical skills are developed in a very progressive and stage-appropriate manner.

CARDIOLOGY & CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY

Common continuing education for all residents

For both training programs, we offer a joint, multi-layered and structured internal training program. At least three events are held each week with a Core Curriculum, Journal Club, case presentations and Echo-Rounds. In addition, we discuss all cases of structural heart disease for which interventions or operations are planned at the Heart Clinic’s Heart Valve Indication Board on a weekly basis. If you are interested, there is always the opportunity to participate in larger and smaller research projects and to publish cases or small case series. Participation in other in-house, national or international training programs is also possible by arrangement.
